Originally built as an athletics stadium, Johannesburg Stadium, alongside the bigger Ellis Park, is now the home ground of one of the country's most famous soccer teams, Orlando Pirates. This elegant stadium, beneath a sweeping roof, accommodates 37 500 people, and its excellent acoustics make it popular for other open-air events and concerts. The athletics events of the seventh All Africa Games were hosted here in 1999, South Africa's first major African sporting event since the ending of apartheid. And the Eighth IAAF World Cup of Athletics was held here the year before, with 58 countries competing. The streets around the stadium are narrow and crowded, but parking is available in open areas nearby, and there are ample car guards on hand.
