John Mayall, the legendary "godfather of British blues," passed away on Monday at the age of 90.

Mayall, whose bands featured some of the most renowned and talented rock musicians of the last five decades, left an indelible mark on the music world.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce John Mayall peacefully passed away in his California home on July 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family," his family stated on Tuesday. "Health issues that had forced John to end his illustrious touring career have now brought peace to one of the world`s greatest road warriors." The cause of death has not been disclosed.

The statement continued, "John Mayall gave us ninety years of tireless efforts to educate, inspire, and entertain. He was surrounded with love by his ex-wives Pamela and Maggie, his secretary Jane, and his close friends. Keep on playing the blues somewhere, John. We love you."

Mayall was a trailblazer for the blues in England during the late Sixties. His band, the Bluesbreakers, featured iconic musicians such as Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Mick Taylor. This October, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is set to induct Mayall, recognizing him with the Musical Influence Award alongside Alexis Korner and Big Mama Thornton, an honor announced earlier this year.

Born in Cheshire, England, Mayall developed a passion for American blues and jazz early in life. A self-taught musician, he mastered the piano, guitar, and harmonica before moving to London to form the Bluesbreakers, which included Eric Clapton following his departure from the Yardbirds.
