Live Nation has continued its post-pandemic growth with another record-setting second quarter.
The company reported a 7% increase in revenue, reaching a record $6.02 billion, and a 21% rise in adjusted operating income (AOI) to $716 million, driven by a 61% gain in the concerts segment’s AOI. These results highlight strong fan demand, despite occasional news of canceled tours and festivals.
The company noted that cancellation rates for North American concerts are lower than in 2023, with Live Nation hosting 39 million fans globally in Q2, a 5% increase from the previous year.
As tours shifted from stadiums to smaller venues, the total number of concerts grew 23.2% in North America and 19.9% overall.
For the first half of 2024, Live Nation`s total revenue rose 12% to $9.8 billion, with AOI improving 19% to $1.08 billion. The number of events increased 16.9% to 25,881, and attendance at Live Nation concerts and festivals climbed 10.4% to 61.8 million.
CEO Michael Rapino stated, “We continue to see strong demand globally, with a growing variety of shows attracting both casual and diehard fans who are buying tickets at all price points, which speaks to the unique experience only live concerts can provide. Venue Nation’s strategic investments in hospitality and infrastructure are driving strong returns as more attendees maximize their onsite experiences. While operating income will be impacted negatively by one-time accruals, we are on track to deliver double-digit AOI growth for the year and look forward to a very busy 2025.”
With fewer stadium shows in 2024, Live Nation is focusing on arenas and high-margin amphitheaters. Arena attendance saw double-digit growth globally, theater and club attendance rose 15%, and amphitheater attendance was up about 40%. Nearly a third of Live Nation’s amphitheaters have been upgraded since 2022, delivering an aggregate return of over 30%.
In ticketing, revenue grew 3% to $731 million, with AOI flat at $293 million. The quarter ranked among the company’s top five for ticket sales, with Ticketmaster selling 78 million fee-bearing tickets, matching the prior year’s quarter. Sponsorships and advertising revenue increased 3% to $312 million, with AOI up 10% to $223 million. Live Nation secured a multiyear partnership with Coca-Cola and extended its agreement with Hulu to stream Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits.
Live Nation’s Q2 revenue was 36% higher than the $4.43 billion reported in Q2 2022, with AOI up 49% from $480 million in the same period. Compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, Q2 revenue and AOI were up 90.8% and 124.4%, respectively, underscoring the company`s significant growth since the industry rebounded from pandemic-era shutdowns.
