The iconic Belgian Tomorrowland Festival is embroiled in a legal dispute over the use of disposable
The iconic Belgian Tomorrowland Festival is embroiled in a legal dispute over the use of disposable cups.
This year, the festival, held annually in Antwerp, received an exception to use its remaining stock of three million disposable cups. However, the Belgian Ministry of the Environment is now claiming that the festival violated environmental laws, potentially facing a fine of up to two million euros.
The Ministry of the Environment states that, since 2023, regulations in the Flanders region mandate that drinks must be served in reusable or largely recycled materials. Tomorrowland, which took place over two weekends in July (20th and 27th), is alleged to have flouted these rules, saving approximately 1.5 million euros in costs by using disposable cups.
The public prosecutor`s office is currently determining whether to prosecute the case or leave it to the Environment Ministry`s fines office. This legal predicament adds a significant financial strain on the festival, which attracts between 400,000 and 600,000 attendees annually.
This year`s 20th edition of Tomorrowland featured performances by top-tier artists such as Afrojack, Alesso, Alok, Don Diablo, Hardwell, Mandy, Meduza, Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso, Swedish House Mafia, and W&W.
As the situation unfolds, the festival`s organizers await the decision on whether Tomorrowland will face prosecution or hefty fines for this environmental infraction.
