In 2023, concert attendance in Denmark saw a continued rise, reaching 7.8 million attendees, up from 7.4 million in 2022.
However, this figure still falls short of pre-pandemic levels, where 8.2 million people attended live music events in 2019, according to new data from Statistics Denmark.
Esben Marcher, director of Dansk Live, an organization representing concert venues and festivals, said to Danish music magazine Gaffa, that while the numbers show improvement, smaller venues are still struggling to return to their former audience levels. "It’s clear that the recovery in the concert venue sector hasn’t fully materialized yet, and attendance is lower than hoped," Marcher says. However, he remains hopeful, expecting audience numbers to surpass 2019 levels in 2024.
A key trend continues to be the dominance of large-scale music events, such as festivals and concerts with over 5,000 attendees.
These mega-events accounted for 35% of all concertgoers in 2023, consistent with previous years. Despite making up just 7% of all concerts, these large events attract a significant portion of the audience.
This shift toward larger, social media-friendly shows has posed challenges for smaller venues, many of which are struggling to sell tickets for emerging artists` performances. Even though venues receive financial support from the Danish Arts Foundation, the competition from big events remains strong.
"Large concerts and festivals are driving the growth in the market," Marcher explains, adding that these events operate in a different economic space. Still, he remains optimistic about the future of smaller venues, which have started to explore new formats and innovative ways to attract audiences post-pandemic.
