The German festival funding program from Initiative Musik is entering its second phase, offering a total of four million euros in grants.

This marks a reduction from the previous round, which distributed five million euros. Music festivals, as well as cross-genre and multidisciplinary events, can apply for up to 50,000 euros in funding.

The application period opens on October 11, 2024, and closes on November 4, 2024. In the last round, 141 festivals secured grants, including Rock Harz at Ballenstedt airfield, which benefited from the program’s financial support.

This second phase of funding will place greater emphasis on festivals outside of major metropolitan areas. A panel of industry experts will evaluate submissions based on sustainability, diversity, support for new talent, and efforts to enhance participation and accessibility. The jury will make recommendations to the program’s sponsors.

Key considerations for selection include projects that foster local cultural diversity, particularly in rural regions. At least 70% of funded festivals must be from non-urban areas.

The grants, however, are contingent upon approval by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as noted by Initiative Musik in its announcement.

Katja Lucker (pictured), managing director of Initiative Musik, highlighted the broader role festivals play beyond music performances: "Festivals are much more than just live music - they are cultural beacons that enable encounters and promote civic engagement,"

She expressed her enthusiasm for the program’s continuation, emphasizing its recognition of the significant cultural contribution these festivals make.

Newly established festivals and those spanning multiple genres and disciplines, including classical music, are encouraged to apply. Festivals that employ independent artists and receive at least 50% of their funding from public sources must adhere to the minimum fee standards set by professional associations.

This second round of funding aims to continue promoting cultural initiatives and enriching the festival landscape across Germany.
