The musician passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a prolonged battle with COPD and other health issues, his family confirmed in a statement. “While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come,” they said.

Stone, born Sylvester Stewart in 1943 in Texas, was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and first began performing with his siblings in a gospel group. In the 1960s, he emerged as a multi-instrumentalist and producer in San Francisco’s vibrant counterculture scene, before forming Sly and the Family Stone in 1966—a racially and gender-diverse band that would help define the sound of funk.

With a groundbreaking fusion of soul, psychedelic rock, gospel, and socially charged lyrics, the group scored a string of major hits, including “Everyday People,” “Dance to the Music,” “Family Affair,” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” Their 1971 classic There’s a Riot Goin’ On is widely hailed as one of the greatest albums of the 20th century.

Stone’s energetic performances and genre-blending innovation helped shape the course of pop, funk, and rock. The band played iconic festivals like Woodstock and the Harlem Cultural Festival, attracting a wide and devoted audience.

Despite early success, the group struggled in the 1970s due to drug use and internal tensions, and officially disbanded in 1975. Stone continued releasing music under the band’s name but faded from the spotlight amid ongoing struggles with addiction and legal troubles. His final studio album, I’m Back! Family & Friends, was released in 2011.

In later years, Stone faced financial difficulties and battled over royalty payments, winning a $5 million lawsuit in 2015—though he never received the full payout due to previous contractual agreements. He lived for a time in a camper van in Los Angeles, reportedly by choice.

Despite these challenges, his legacy remained untouched. Stone was honored with a Grammy tribute in 2006 and continued to inspire generations of artists.

“Sly was a monumental figure, a groundbreaking innovator, and a true pioneer who redefined the landscape of pop, funk, and rock music,” his family said. They also revealed that Stone had recently completed a screenplay based on his life, a follow-up to his 2024 memoir, which they plan to release in the near future.

Sly Stone leaves behind an enduring catalog of music that continues to influence artists and captivate fans around the world.
