Connecting the live music industry
Brian Wilson, the visionary behind The Beach Boys and one of the most influential figures in modern music, has died at the age of 82.
His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on social media Wednesday.
“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” the statement reads. “We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”
Born on June 20, 1942, in Hawthorne, California, Wilson was the creative engine behind The Beach Boys, which he co-founded in 1961 alongside his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. As composer, producer, vocalist, bassist, and keyboardist, Wilson’s innovative songwriting and production techniques helped shape the sound of American pop music.
Under his direction, The Beach Boys rose to global fame with hits like Surfin’ U.S.A., I Get Around, California Girls, and Surfer Girl. The band sold over 100 million records worldwide, with more than 80 songs charting globally and 36 entering the U.S. Top 40 — four of which topped the Billboard Hot 100.
Wilson’s 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds, is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, featuring enduring classics like Wouldn’t It Be Nice and God Only Knows. The album ranked No. 2 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. His ambitious follow-up, Smile, was shelved for decades before its eventual release as a solo project in 2004.
Throughout his life, Wilson faced numerous personal and creative challenges, including well-documented struggles with mental health. In early 2024, it was reported that he was living with a neurocognitive disorder and under full-time care.
Despite these hardships, Wilson’s contributions to music earned him numerous accolades, including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, two Grammy Awards as a solo artist, and an Ivor Novello Award.
His legacy as a musical pioneer — blending lush harmonies, experimental studio work, and deeply personal songwriting — endures as a cornerstone of pop and rock history.
Wilson is survived by his children and extended family.
