US singer-songwriter Michael Franti has split from longtime management firm Activist Artist Management following allegations of sexual abuse made against him by Spanish-American artist Victoria Canal.
Franti, who had been represented by Activist for nearly a decade, denied the claims but acknowledged that he had engaged in a years-long affair with Canal without his wife’s knowledge.
The allegations surfaced after Canal published a personal account on social media, describing an unnamed partner as supportive in public but controlling and abusive in private. She alleged non-consensual touching and photographing, as well as efforts to isolate her from others.
Franti later addressed the post in his own statement, confirming he was the person referenced and disputing the allegations. “The relationship was completely consensual, based on mutual feelings and attraction,” he wrote, adding that he “vehemently” rejected any characterization of abuse.
The controversy led to the cancellation of Franti’s *Soulshine at Sea* music cruise, which was scheduled to depart in November with Norwegian Cruise Line and promoter Sixthman. Several acts, including Dispatch, Maggie Rose, Liz Vice, and Tank and the Bangas, withdrew from the lineup following the revelations.
Activist Artist Management declined to comment on its decision to part ways with Franti.
