Connecting the live music industry
AEG Europe, the European division of global live entertainment company AEG, has signed a new agreement that will see its UK venues become the first in the live entertainment industry to run entirely on the country’s greenest energy.
The landmark deal combines Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with a 100% renewable electricity supply, verified through hourly-matched Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs), in partnership with Ecotricity.
Under the agreement, specific solar and hydro energy assets will be allocated to AEG’s UK venues, including The O2, Indigo at The O2, Eventim Apollo, Watford Colosseum, and The Halls Wolverhampton. The initiative ensures that these sites operate on what AEG describes as “deep green energy,” providing full transparency and meeting audit-level scrutiny standards.
Sam Booth, director of sustainability at AEG Europe, said: “PPAs are widely recognised as the gold standard in energy procurement, and we’re proud to play a role in launching this first-of-its-kind agreement. It marks a significant milestone in the ongoing journey to decarbonise the live entertainment industry, and we’re pleased to help drive this progress.”
Ecotricity founder Dale Vince OBE added: “This is big news for live music, as venues across Britain – including London’s iconic The O2 – will be powered by deep green energy. AEG has already been working with us to bring clean power to outdoor festivals like All Points East and Lido earlier this summer, and now they’re bringing green power indoors. It’s a major step forward for the live entertainment world.”
AEG Europe has been a leader in sustainability initiatives across its global venue and festival network. The company hosted the world’s first carbon-removed events at The O2 in February 2024, removing 545.9 tonnes of carbon across four shows – equivalent to the annual electricity usage of nearly 400 homes.
Additional initiatives across AEG’s European venues include lower-carbon food menus, reusable cup systems, biodegradable serveware, and other emission-reduction projects. Its festival portfolio also features environmental programmes such as carbon labelling for food vendors and audience engagement campaigns to promote sustainability.
