Brad Arnold, lead singer and principal songwriter of 3 Doors Down, has died following a battle with cancer.
The band confirmed his death in a statement posted on X on Saturday. “He will be deeply missed and forever remembered,” the band said.
Arnold revealed in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with stage four clear cell renal carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer that had spread to his lungs. At the time, he said he was not afraid of the illness but expressed disappointment that the band would be forced to cancel an upcoming tour.
Formed in Mississippi in the mid-1990s, 3 Doors Down rose to international prominence in the early 2000s with a series of mainstream rock hits, including Kryptonite, Here Without You, When I`m Gone and Loser. Arnold wrote “Kryptonite,” the band’s breakout single, while still in school at the age of 15, according to the band.
In a statement, 3 Doors Down said Arnold, a founding member, vocalist and original drummer, “helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners.”
The band’s debut album, The Better Life, was among the biggest-selling records of the year in the US, and the group went on to win three Billboard Music Awards. They remained a regular presence on rock and pop radio throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
Another founding member of the original trio, guitarist Matt Roberts, died in 2016 at the age of 38.
Arnold had spoken openly about his struggles with alcoholism and his recovery, stating in interviews that he had been sober since 2016. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer.
