Industry executives at the East European Music Conference (EEMC) in Bucharest highlighted the continued importance of showcase festivals in developing emerging artists and helping acts progress from small club stages to major festival and stadium opportunities.

The panel discussion, titled From Showcase to Stadium, took place during last week’s conference and featured speakers including Thomas Zsifkovits of Nova Rock Festival, Detlef Schwarte from Reeperbahn Festival, and Robert Meijering from Eurosonic Noorderslag.

The discussion focused on how showcase festivals continue to play a significant role in artist discovery, international networking and career development, while also stressing that artists need professional infrastructure around them to maximise opportunities.

Thomas Zsifkovits said that, despite more than 30 years in the business, he still enjoys discovering new talent and sees it as an obligation for everyone working in the live music industry to help break new artists and support emerging talent.

According to Robert Meijering, Eurosonic Noorderslag receives between 4,000 and 5,000 artist applications annually, but only around 350 artists are ultimately booked to perform each year — representing less than 10% of applicants. He added that around 35% of the applications qualify for consideration within the festival’s selection process.

Detlef Schwarte said Reeperbahn Festival receives approximately 3,000 applications each year, although he noted that the festival’s final programming is largely built through industry networks rather than direct applications. He also said around 50% of the festival’s lineup is booked with ticket sales considerations in mind.

All panelists agreed that artists need to be fully prepared before participating in showcase festivals, emphasising that strong live performances alone are often not enough to generate long-term career momentum.

The speakers highlighted the importance of having a professional support structure in place, including agents, managers and labels, in order to capitalise on showcase opportunities and convert industry attention into touring, festival bookings and broader international growth.

The East European Music Conference brings together promoters, festivals, agents, managers and music professionals from across Europe, with a focus on networking and developments within the live entertainment sector.
