Berlin Pride Attack Leaves One Dead, 16 Injured

One person was killed and 16 others injured after a vehicle was driven into a crowd near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations on Saturday, according to German police.
The incident took place close to Tiergarten park in central Berlin, where tens of thousands of people had gathered for one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride events. Three of those injured were reported to be in a life-threatening condition, while several others suffered serious or minor injuries.
Police said they were treating the incident as a deliberate attack and had launched a citywide search for a suspect. More than 2,200 personnel were deployed, including officers from other German federal states.
Authorities identified the wanted suspect as a 21-year-old man who was known to police and believed to have links to Berlin’s Islamist scene. Police warned that he could be armed and dangerous and advised members of the public not to approach him.
No arrests had been made by early Sunday, and investigators said it remained unclear whether additional people had been involved.
The vehicle was described as a white minivan or compact SUV. Police closed Tiergarten park and surrounding areas while officers and forensic teams examined the scene.
Berlin’s mayor described the incident as an attack on the city’s “free and open society”. The Christopher Street Day event is a major fixture in Berlin’s annual cultural calendar and attracts visitors from Germany and abroad.
