UK survey reveals music fans concerns

A new national survey, Music Fans Voice, has gathered insights from more than 8,000 live music attendees across the UK, offering a comprehensive look at public attitudes toward the live music industry.
The survey, which ran from February 3 to March 4, 2025, was conducted by CGA in partnership with NIQ and commissioned by eight major UK local authorities, including Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the Mayor of London, Liverpool City Region, and Cardiff City Council. Additional support came from councils and combined authorities in West Yorkshire, Brighton & Hove, and Southend.
This initiative followed a recommendation from the UK Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, which called for a fan-led review of live and electronic music.
Survey Highlights: A significant majority (99%) of respondents said they believe live music is an important part of UK culture. 95% agreed that live music contributes positively to the UK’s international reputation. 68% viewed the UK as a global leader in live music events. However, the survey also identified several areas of concern. Among them were ticket resale practices, dynamic pricing, venue closures, and the cost of living: 97% supported face-value ticket resale. 91% expressed opposition to the resale of tickets above face value and to dynamic pricing practices. Only 11% of respondents who purchased dynamically priced tickets felt pricing was clearly communicated. Financial challenges were a recurring theme. Over half of those surveyed said financial constraints were the main reason they were attending fewer live events. When asked about possible solutions, 91% agreed that lower ticket prices could increase attendance. Support for local music scenes also featured prominently: 84% said they attend events to support artists. 71% cited support for local venues and performers as a motivation for attendance. 94% supported offering some form of protected status to significant venues and nightclubs. 93% agreed that £1 from every stadium or arena show ticket should go into a grassroots music support fund. Commenting on the findings, representatives from participating cities and artists involved in the project emphasized the role of fans in shaping the future of live music.
