BVMI and GWVR extend licensing agreement for Promoters` rights

The German Music Industry Association (BVMI) and the Society for the Administration of Promoters` Rights (GWVR) have announced an extension of their agreement regarding the licensing of promoters` rights, originally signed in June 2020. This new agreement follows several years of negotiations, which began in 2015. The updated contract largely retains the terms for the legally secure use of label content at public music events, with the only changes being a series of "administrative simplifications." Under the original agreement, fees for live recordings of audio and video ranged between 1.71% and 4% of the retail price. For online exploitation, rights holders received a fee of 4.5% of the amount the licensee earned from online services using their recordings. René Houareau, BVMI Managing Director of Legal & Policy, praised the collaboration, stating, "Although some hurdles had to be overcome, the open questions were ultimately resolved with compromises acceptable to both sides." Johannes Ulbricht (pictured), Managing Director of GWVR, also emphasized the importance of the partnership: "The labels are one of the most important partners for event organizers, and we are pleased to continue and deepen our partnership in licensing." Additionally, GWVR plans to introduce a new tariff for the licensing of live recordings on public radio and television, along with media library use, starting in April 2024.
