Copenhagen venue VEGA turns 30

Danish live music venue VEGA in Copenhagen is marking its 30th anniversary this September, celebrating three decades of hosting Danish and international artists.

Opened as a music venue in 1996, the year Copenhagen held the title of European Capital of Culture, VEGA occupies the former Folkets Hus in the city’s Vesterbro district.

The building was designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen and originally opened in 1956, meaning the anniversary year also marks 70 years of the building itself.

Its architecture remains a distinctive part of the concert experience. Wood panelling, chandeliers and carefully designed interiors reflect Lauritzen’s attention to detail, extending from the main halls to fittings and door handles. The building is now protected, preserving the setting in which VEGA has developed its live music activities.

For promoters and booking agents, VEGA offers several room sizes within one venue. Its current event specifications list standing capacities of 1,600 for Store VEGA, 500 for Lille VEGA and 200 for Ideal Bar. This range accommodates smaller club shows as well as established touring acts, providing stages for artists at different points in their careers.

The anniversary comes alongside a programme spanning Danish artists and international visitors. September’s listings include Ella Mai, Current 93, The Lemon Twigs and Donny Benét.

VEGA is operated by a foundation, with any surplus reinvested in music. Revenue from popular concerts helps fund its work with emerging artists and other initiatives supporting the development of live music.

Beyond concerts, VEGA also hosts conferences, award shows, television productions and private events. Thirty years after its conversion into a music venue, the former workers’ assembly building continues to serve as a meeting place, with live music at the centre of its activities.
