Hamburg to renovate iconic venues

The city of Hamburg has unveiled plans to invest €14.3 million to renovate the iconic live music clubs Gruenspan and Indra, both located on the Große Freiheit in St. Pauli, Germany. Known as cultural landmarks, the clubs have long played a vital role in Hamburg’s music scene but are now in need of significant structural and aesthetic upgrades. As part of the project, both venues’ facades will be restored, fire safety systems enhanced, and Gruenspan will gain a new backstage area. This expansion will increase its capacity from 900 to 1,100 people, ensuring its competitiveness as a live music venue. A new facade on Gruenspan’s south side will also improve structural stability, and the famed mural by Werner Nöfer and Dieter Glasmacher will be repainted while preserving the original artwork beneath. To minimize disruptions during the renovations, expected to begin in mid-2025, a temporary venue in a central location is already being prepared. The Hamburg Parliament must now approve the funding during upcoming budget discussions. Gruenspan has a storied history dating back to 1889, when it first opened as Hamburg’s Palmengarten dance hall. Over the decades, it has served as a concert hall, cinema, and even a public bathhouse. It took on its current name in the 1960s after being transformed into a dance palace. Indra, one of Hamburg’s oldest clubs, opened in 1960 and quickly became a cornerstone of the city’s rock and beat music scene. Notably, the Beatles performed there for the first time on August 17, 1960, marking the start of their legendary Hamburg years.
