Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican Music Icon, Dies Aged 81

Cliff was widely regarded as one of reggae’s most influential figures, known globally for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, Wonderful World, Beautiful People, and I Can See Clearly Now. 

His lead role in the 1972 film The Harder They Come helped propel both reggae music and Jamaican cinema onto the world stage.

Born in Saint James, Jamaica, in 1944, Cliff began his career in the early 1960s after moving to Kingston, where he worked with producer Leslie Kong. His breakthrough came later in the decade after signing with Island Records, achieving UK chart success with tracks such as *Wonderful World, Beautiful People* and his cover of Cat Stevens’ *Wild World*.

Cliff’s work blended uplifting melodies with socially conscious themes, making him a central figure in shaping reggae’s international reach. He was one of the few artists to receive the Jamaican Order of Merit, the country’s third-highest honour.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute, calling him “a true cultural giant whose music carried the heart of our nation to the world”.

Throughout his career, Cliff collaborated with a wide range of artists, including the Rolling Stones, Sting, Wyclef Jean, and Tim Armstrong of Rancid, with whom he won a Grammy.
