UK Venue Owner Paul Jackson of The Adelphi Club Dies

Paul Jackson, owner of The Adelphi Club in the UK city of Hull, has passed away, according to a statement from Music Venue Trust.

Jackson was widely regarded as a key figure in the UK’s grassroots live music sector. Over several decades, he played a central role in supporting emerging artists by providing early performance opportunities and fostering a local music community through The Adelphi Club.

The venue has long been recognised as an important part of the UK’s live music infrastructure, hosting a wide range of developing acts and contributing to the growth of independent music scenes.

In 2019, Jackson received Music Venue Trust’s Outstanding Achievement Award at Venues Day, presented by KT Tunstall and Steve Lamacq, in recognition of his long-standing contribution to grassroots venues.

Mark Davyd, CEO of Music Venue Trust, said: “They threw away the mould after they made Paul Jackson. He was an inspiration to so many of us in the grassroots sector. Unpredictable, sometimes chaotic, deeply passionate, driven and just belligerently, brilliantly, devoted to keeping live music alive in the city he called home. In a sensible universe there would be a statue erected to Paul at the end of De Grey Street pointing the way to the centre of Hull’s reputation as a place where music thrives. Since we don’t live in that universe, yet, I’m proud we got to tell Paul how respected and loved he was while he was here to hear it.

“Winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Music Award 2019, the one, the only, Paul Jackson. If you want to know what he was like, when Steve Lamacq was reading out the words to announce the award explaining everything he had achieved and how much it meant to all of us, Paul kept looking around the room to see who it could possibly be that had done all those amazing, fantastic things.”

Music Venue Trust said Jackson’s impact extended across generations of artists and audiences, highlighting his role in nurturing talent and sustaining independent venue culture in the UK.
