20 UK Festivals Cancelled or Postponed in 2026
The UK`s independent festival sector has reached another milestone in 2026, with 20 festivals having announced cancellations, postponements or fallow years so far this year, according to the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF).
The latest event affected is WOMAD Glasgow, which cancelled its 2026 edition, citing low ticket sales. Similar reasons were given by Country On The Eye Festival in Melton Mowbray, which also called off its planned event last month.
The figures follow a challenging period for the sector. A total of 43 UK festivals were cancelled, postponed or closed in 2025, after a record 78 festivals fell in 2024.
The latest developments come shortly after the UK Government announced a temporary reduction in VAT for children`s tickets, meals and family attractions as part of its Great British Summer Saving initiative. AIF has confirmed that family and children`s festival tickets will be included in the scheme.
According to AIF, the measure is expected to benefit festivalgoers through lower ticket prices while also providing some relief to organisers facing rising operational costs and ongoing cashflow pressures.
In response, the organisation is calling on the Government to introduce further support measures for the festival sector. Its proposals include extending the VAT reduction scheme into the 2027 festival season, ensuring independent festivals are included in the Government`s forthcoming Creative Industries Sector Plan and Music Growth Package, and piloting a Grassroots Music Festival Tax Relief aimed at supporting independent events.
AIF CEO John Rostron said: “It`s incredibly tough to see vibrant and creative music festivals fall. Mostly, we`re seeing very strong demand from audiences, and some record sellouts, but independent festival promoters are seeing their margins become ever thinner, desperately trying to make ends meet while at the same time trying to keep their events as affordable as possible for the general public.
“We welcome The Great British Summer Saving initiative which will be helpful for family oriented festivals but we need earlier commitment to the reduction for 2027, and specific, sector-wide support to stem cancellations and boost the growth of new events.”
The Association of Independent Festivals has continued to highlight financial pressures facing independent event organisers, despite strong audience demand across parts of the market, with rising costs and narrowing margins remaining key challenges for many festival promoters.
