Smukfest Founder Steps Down After 46 Years
J.P. Andersen, one of the founders of Denmark’s Smukfest, is stepping down after 46 years with the organisation, bringing to a close a career that has helped turn the Skanderborg event from a small volunteer-run festival into one of Scandinavia’s largest music festivals.
Andersen, widely known as J.P., co-founded Skanderborg Festivalklub with four friends on 1 June 1980. Just over a month later, on 5 July, the first festival took place in Dyrehaven in Skanderborg.
The inaugural event attracted around 600-1,000 visitors and featured eight bands, most of which performed without a fee. Today, Smukfest welcomes around 60,000 guests per day, operates five music stages and has a main Bøgescenen stage with capacity for approximately 40,000 people.
Over the course of his 46 years with the festival, Andersen has been involved in booking more than 5,000 concerts.
During that period, Smukfest has hosted a long list of major international and Danish artists, including Prince, P!nk, Justin Bieber, Björk and Gary Moore, alongside leading Danish acts such as Gnags, Thomas Helmig, TV-2 and Anne Linnet.
“J.P. dreamed of celebration and colour in Skanderborg in the early 1980s and created a festival where music was combined with the spirit of association and a youthful belief that anything is possible if we do it together,” said Smukfest head of content and spokesperson Trine Bang.
Booking strategy built around broad appeal
According to Smukfest music director Mikkel Xavier, Andersen played a central role in developing the festival’s broad programming profile, combining international headliners, emerging acts and established Danish artists.
“J.P. has booked some of the world’s biggest names, but at the same time he has always insisted on an uncompromising popular appeal, with room for the biggest stars, new talent and the Danish names audiences love,” Xavier said.
“Musically, there should be something for both young and older audiences. If it is popular, Smukfest has had room for it. That is a large part of the explanation for why Smukfest has become Smukfest.”
One of Denmark’s largest volunteer organisations
Smukfest has retained its non-profit and association-based structure as the wider European festival market has increasingly attracted investment from international entertainment groups.
Skanderborg Festivalklub had 19 members in 1980, around half of whom were relatives of the founders. Today, it has 20,853 paying members, including approximately 19,000 active volunteers.
The first festival involved 18 volunteers. In 2026, the organisation describes Smukfest as one of Denmark’s largest cultural volunteer communities.
Smukfest is operated by the non-profit Skanderborg Festival association, with profits reinvested in the organisation and charitable activities. The festival reported turnover of approximately DKK 300 million in 2025.
The first edition in 1980 made a loss, but the organisation continued with the support of a creditor and subsequently developed into one of Denmark’s largest festivals.
Final booking brings story full circle
Andersen was made a lifetime member of Det Danske Rockakademi in autumn 2025 in recognition of his contribution to Danish music over several decades.
Andersen’s final booking for Smukfest was Danish band Gnags, who are appearing at the 2026 festival.
The booking has particular historical significance. When Andersen was looking for artists for the original festival in 1979, he contacted Gnags. The band had already become too established to perform for free, but frontman Peter A.G. reportedly advised Andersen on other musicians he could approach.
Forty-six years later, Gnags’ return to the Smukfest programme became the final booking signed by Andersen before stepping down.
